We can immediately ‘understand’ a scene when we see it: how is it organized (what is the figure & what is the background), what type of scene is it (e.g. indoor or outdoor), which objects are present (e.g. two people holding hands in front of a train), and what is going on (e.g. they are in love and one of them is leaving on a trip).

The ease with which we can grasp this meaning masks the enormous complexity and flexibility of the underlying machinery. In our lab we investigate this machinery with an interdisciplinary approach, using insights from cognitive science, psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, and computational science.
